01Overview

Built from IS:2062 mild structural steel with fully welded modular construction. Because the deck is flush with ground level, no loading/unloading ramps are required and the footprint is smaller than an above-ground install — the trade-off is the civil pit excavation itself.

02How it works

Flush with the ground, by design

A pit-type weighbridge is built to sit inside an excavated pit so the top of the deck finishes level with the surrounding pavement. A vehicle drives straight across the deck the same way it would drive across any stretch of yard — there's no ramp to climb or descend, because there's no height difference to overcome.

Fully welded modular construction

The deck is built from IS:2062 mild structural steel as a fully welded modular structure — welded at every joint rather than bolted — which suits a pit installation well, since the whole assembly sits protected within the pit walls once installed and isn't handled or reconfigured on site the way an above-ground modular deck might be.

Why footprint matters here more than elsewhere

Because there's no ramp on either end, a pit-type bridge needs meaningfully less total length of prepared surface than a ramped design of the same deck length — the approach and departure lanes can be ordinary pavement right up to the deck edge, which is the whole appeal on a site where land is tight.

03Manufacturing & build quality

The deck is fabricated from IS:2062 structural steel plate and beam sections, fully welded at the factory into a rigid modular frame — every structural joint that will bear vehicle load is a shop weld, inspected before the structure moves on. Because the finished deck will sit inside a below-grade pit exposed to more moisture and less air circulation than an above-ground install, corrosion protection gets particular attention: thorough shot-blasting to bare metal, a full primer and top-coat system, and careful sealing around load cell mounting points and cable entries to keep water out of the pit's most sensitive components. Load cell brackets are machined to a common level datum, and the assembled deck is test-fitted and load-tested on the shop floor before being broken down for transport to site, where it's lowered into the prepared pit and set on its foundation.

Space-constrained sites

Where the available yard length won't accommodate a ramped, above-ground weighbridge and its approach/departure ramps, a flush pit-type deck fits a materially shorter overall footprint.

Low-clearance vehicles and ramp gradient issues

Some vehicle types — low-bed trailers, certain forklifts, specialised plant — don't tolerate a ramp gradient well, risking underbody scraping. A flush deck removes the gradient question entirely.

High vehicle throughput in a tight lane

Without ramps to slow vehicles down on the approach, a pit-type installation in a short, well-marked lane can move vehicles through a queue with less distance needed per weighment cycle.

Sites that need the yard surface to read as continuous

Some facilities — particularly where forklifts and other yard traffic cross the weighing area constantly, not just trucks being weighed — benefit from a deck that doesn't interrupt the flat, continuous surface the way a raised structure would.

05Why it matters

Land is often the tightest constraint on an industrial site's layout, and a weighbridge with two long approach ramps can eat up more usable yard than the scale itself. A pit installation trades that footprint for civil excavation work, which is a real cost but a one-time one — set against years of a yard that isn't compromised by unusable ramp gradients on either side of the scale. For plants operating in dense industrial areas or retrofitting a weighbridge into an already-built site, that trade-off is frequently the deciding factor.

How is the pit kept dry?

Pit installations are built with proper damp-proofing and drainage sloped to a sump, typically with a pump to clear collected rainwater or wash-down runoff — this is a standing maintenance item that an above-ground design doesn't have.

Is a pit-type bridge more expensive than pitless?

The civil works (excavation, pit walls, drainage) generally cost more than pouring foundation piers at grade for a pitless design, so pit-type is usually chosen for its footprint and flush-access benefits rather than for cost savings.

Does ground clearance matter with a flush deck?

That's the main advantage — with no ramp, vehicle ground clearance essentially stops being a design constraint, which matters for low-bed trailers and certain specialised equipment that struggle with ramp gradients.

How do technicians access the pit for maintenance?

Pit installations include access covers or hatches at the deck edge or end, sized for a technician to reach the load cells and junction box without needing to remove deck sections.

Does the surrounding pavement need resurfacing after installation?

Yes — the approach and departure surfaces on either side of the pit need to be finished level with the deck top, so pavement or concrete work around the pit is typically part of the same installation project.
