01Overview

The HWC-M series is a mild steel weighbridge with a modular build, used for weighing vehicles on public roads. The modular structure ships in a standard 20ft open-top container and assembles on site with bolted connections — no welding required at install.

02How it works

Built as modules, not one giant casting

A modular weighbridge is fabricated as several shorter deck sections — typically 3 to 6 metres each — rather than one continuous span. Each module is a complete structural unit: steel deck plate on longitudinal I-beams, with load cell mounting pads at each end. On site, the modules line up end to end on their piers and bolt together through match-drilled flange plates, so the whole deck behaves as one rigid structure once assembled, without a single field weld joining module to module.

How a moving wheel load reaches the load cells

As a vehicle's axle crosses the deck, its wheel load transfers through the deck plate into the longitudinal beams, which carry it to the nearest module joint where a load cell sits under each corner. The indicator sums the signal from every load cell in real time, so it doesn't matter where on the deck the vehicle's weight happens to sit at any instant — the total is continuously correct as the vehicle rolls across and comes to rest.

Why bolted joints instead of site welding

Structural welds made in a factory, under controlled conditions with jigs holding tolerances, are more consistent than welds made outdoors on an active job site. Bolting the modules together at site removes that variable — the load-bearing welds are all done in the shop, and the field connection is a mechanical joint that can be tightened, inspected, and re-torqued without any welding equipment or hot-work permit on site.

03Manufacturing & build quality

Each module starts as cut and CNC-punched mild steel plate and beam stock, jig-welded so every module comes off the line with the same beam spacing and camber. Load cell mounting pads are machined flat and level to a tight tolerance, since even a small mismatch between pads translates into an uneven load share across the cells once the deck is loaded. After welding, the structure is shot-blasted to bare metal to remove mill scale and any weld spatter, then primed and top-coated for corrosion protection before the load cells and wiring looms are fitted. Modules are match-marked so they're reassembled on site in the same order and orientation they were built and dry-fitted in the factory, and the completed deck is test-loaded on the shop floor before it's broken back down into modules, packed into a standard container, and shipped.

04Problems it solves

Long civil-works downtime

A cast-in-place weighbridge deck can tie up a site for weeks between excavation, formwork, and concrete cure time. A modular deck's civil work is limited to the pier foundations, and once those have cured the deck itself goes together in days, because the structural fabrication already happened in the factory.

Inconsistent site-weld quality

Field welds on structural steel depend heavily on the individual welder, the weather, and site conditions — none of which a factory has to contend with. Moving the structural welding into the shop and leaving only bolted connections for site assembly removes that inconsistency from the most safety-critical joints in the structure.

Transport limits on oversized decks

A single-piece weighbridge deck long enough for a multi-axle truck is an oversized load in its own right, needing special transport permits and escort. Splitting the same deck into modules that fit inside a standard 20ft open-top container turns a specialised heavy-haulage job into routine freight.

Expansion or relocation later

Because the structure is bolted rather than welded end to end, a modular bridge can, within reasonable limits, be extended, reconfigured, or relocated later without cutting into a monolithic deck — something a fully cast or fully welded structure doesn't allow for.

05Why it matters

A weighbridge is the instrument that decides how much a truckload of goods is actually worth — freight is billed, royalties are calculated, and inbound raw material is invoiced against the number this machine produces. If the deck itself is compromised by inconsistent fabrication or a slow, disruptive installation, that inaccuracy or downtime has a direct financial cost, not just an inconvenience. A modular build gets a site weighing accurately sooner, with structural quality set in a controlled factory environment rather than left to site conditions, which matters just as much for a plant that can't afford a multi-week gap in its inbound logistics as it does for the accuracy of any single weighment.

How do I choose the right capacity for our trucks?

Size the bridge to the maximum gross vehicle weight you expect to cross it, with headroom for future larger vehicles — most operators size a bridge one capacity class above their current heaviest truck rather than matching it exactly, since re-rating a bridge later is far more disruptive than specifying correctly up front.

What civil work is needed before installation?

You need level, load-bearing pier foundations sized to the bridge's total loaded weight plus the heaviest vehicle it will carry, positioned to the module spacing. A geotechnical check of the ground bearing capacity at your site is worth doing before foundation design, especially on filled or soft ground.

Can it be installed indoors or does it need to be outside?

Most modular weighbridges are designed for outdoor, all-weather use as a road-vehicle instrument, but the same modular deck can be installed under a canopy or inside a covered weigh-in facility if you want to protect the electronics and extend surface life in a harsh climate.

How long does on-site installation actually take?

Once the pier foundations have cured, bolting the modules together, fitting load cells and junction boxes, and commissioning the indicator is typically a matter of days rather than weeks — the foundation cure time is usually the longer part of the overall timeline.

How often does a weighbridge need recalibration?

Trade and industrial weighbridges are typically checked and recalibrated on a periodic schedule (commonly annually, sometimes more often depending on local legal-metrology requirements and traffic volume) using certified test weights, and after any event that could affect structural alignment, such as a major overload or foundation movement.
