Scans a QR code (printed on a driver pass or shown on a phone) as an alternative or supplement to RFID tagging for vehicle/transaction identification at the weighbridge.

02How it works

Optical decoding instead of a radio tag

Where an RFID system identifies a vehicle by reading a radio-frequency tag, a QR code scanner identifies it by optically decoding a printed or on-screen pattern — the code can be printed on a driver's pass, a delivery note, or displayed on a phone screen through a driver-facing app, and the scanner's camera or imaging sensor reads it the same way a retail barcode scanner reads a product code.

Fits the same ticketing sequence as RFID

Functionally, a QR scan plays the same role in the weighment sequence that an RFID read does — it identifies the vehicle or transaction and passes that identification through to the weighbridge software, which then matches it against the authorized list or transaction record before the weighment proceeds.

A lower-cost, more flexible alternative for occasional visitors

An RFID tag is a physical item that has to be issued, tracked, and replaced if lost, which makes sense for a captive fleet that visits regularly. A QR code, printed fresh for each transaction or generated in a driver's app, doesn't carry that same per-vehicle hardware cost, which suits sites with a lot of occasional or one-off visiting vehicles.

03Manufacturing & build quality

The scanner is built around an imaging or laser-decoding module capable of reading QR codes from both printed material and illuminated phone screens under variable ambient light — a meaningfully different reading condition than a fixed printed barcode, since screen glare and brightness vary. The module is paired with a housing suited to its mounting location (handheld for driver-presented passes, or fixed-mount at a booth or gate), and the unit's data output interface is tested against the weighbridge software's expected identification format before the scanner ships.

Cost of tagging infrequent or one-off vehicles

Issuing an RFID tag to a vehicle that visits once doesn't make economic sense; a QR code costs nothing beyond printing or generating it for that single visit.

Lost or damaged RFID tags

A physical tag can be lost, damaged, or left in a different vehicle by mistake; a QR code tied to a driver's app or a printed pass reissued for each visit avoids that dependency on a physical, reusable object.

Visitor and temporary access needs

Sites with regular visiting contractors, one-off deliveries, or temporary vehicle access often prefer generating a QR code per visit over managing a growing pool of visitor RFID tags.

Linking a weighment to a digital driver record

Where a driver-facing app already generates a code for a transaction, scanning it at the weighbridge ties the physical weighment directly to that digital record without separate manual matching.

05Why it matters

Not every vehicle that needs weighing belongs to a fleet worth permanently tagging, and forcing every visitor through an RFID-only identification process either under-serves occasional visitors or over-invests in tags that get used once. A QR option gives a site the flexibility to identify a captive fleet with RFID and everyone else with a code generated on the spot, without turning vehicle identification into a bottleneck either way.

What's the effective read range?

QR scanning generally requires the code to be presented at close range — typically within reach of a handheld scanner or close to a fixed reader — unlike UHF RFID, which can read at a distance; this is a deliberate trade-off for the lower cost and flexibility of a printed or on-screen code.

Does it read codes off a phone screen reliably?

Yes, the scanner is designed to handle both printed and mobile-screen codes, though screen glare in direct sunlight can occasionally require the driver to adjust screen angle or brightness — worth testing under your site's typical conditions.

Should we use QR or RFID for our site?

RFID suits a captive, regularly-returning fleet where the per-tag cost is justified by repeated use; QR suits sites with a lot of occasional visitors, contractors, or one-off deliveries — many sites end up running both, RFID for the regular fleet and QR for everyone else.

How does it integrate with our existing weighbridge software?

Can it operate outdoors in variable lighting?
