Prints the weigh ticket at the end of a weighment — thermal printers for fast, low-running-cost output including barcodes/logos; impact dot-matrix where a durable multi-part carbon-copy ticket is needed for long-term filing.

02How it works

Thermal print for speed and low running cost

Thermal printers create an image by selectively heating heat-sensitive paper as it passes under a print head — no ink or ribbon involved, which makes them fast and cheap to run per ticket, and capable of printing barcodes or a company logo alongside the weight data.

Impact dot-matrix for durability and carbon copies

An impact printer strikes pins against an inked ribbon to mark the paper, which — unlike thermal printing — works through multiple layers of carbon-copy paper at once, producing several physical copies of the same ticket in a single print pass (one for the driver, one for the office, one for the customer, for example) and produces a print that doesn't fade the way thermal paper can over years of storage.

Sequential numbering as the backbone of the audit trail

Every ticket printed carries a sequential number, so a gap in the sequence is immediately visible during any later audit or reconciliation — a missing or duplicated ticket number is a red flag precisely because the numbering is supposed to be continuous and unbroken.

03Manufacturing & build quality

Thermal print mechanisms are built around a precision heating element array and paper-feed mechanism, assembled and calibrated for consistent print density and speed. Impact dot-matrix mechanisms use a print head with an array of mechanically actuated pins, tuned for reliable multi-copy carbon impact without paper jamming through the extra layers. Both mechanism types are integrated with control firmware supporting the interface options — RS-232, Ethernet, or USB — that connect the printer to the weighbridge indicator, and each finished unit is run through print-quality and multi-copy (for dot-matrix models) tests before dispatch.

No durable, physical record of a disputed weighment

A digital-only record can be questioned in ways a signed, sequentially-numbered paper ticket generally isn't — the printer produces the physical evidence that closes that gap.

Thermal paper fading over long archival periods

Thermal prints can fade over years of storage, which matters for records that need to remain legible for audit or legal purposes — dot-matrix output on standard paper stock doesn't have that fade risk.

Needing multiple physical copies at the point of transaction

Where driver, office, and customer copies are all needed on the spot, a multi-part dot-matrix ticket produces them in one pass, rather than requiring a separate print run or photocopy for each party.

Interface mismatches with older or newer indicators

Supporting RS-232, Ethernet, and USB interfaces means the printer can connect to both legacy indicator setups and more modern networked installations without needing a different printer model for each.

05Why it matters

The printed ticket is often the single artefact that a dispute over a weighment gets settled against — it's what the driver walks away with, what gets filed for audit, and in many jurisdictions, part of what makes a trade weighment legally admissible. Choosing the right printer type for how long that record needs to last, and how many parties need a copy at the moment of printing, is a small decision with outsized consequences the one time a ticket actually gets challenged months or years later.

Thermal or dot-matrix — which should we choose?

Thermal for speed and low running cost where a single copy and shorter archival life is acceptable; dot-matrix where you need multiple carbon copies per transaction or a print that won't fade in long-term storage.

How often do we need to replace paper or ribbon?

Thermal printers only need paper roll replacement (no ribbon); dot-matrix printers need both paper and periodic ribbon replacement — running costs are correspondingly higher for dot-matrix, offset by the durability and multi-copy benefits.

What interface does it need to connect to our indicator?

RS-232, Ethernet, or USB are all supported — check which interface your existing or planned indicator outputs before ordering, since older indicators are more likely to be RS-232-only.

How fast can it print during busy periods?

Both types are built for the throughput a weighbridge lane realistically needs — the more relevant question at a high-traffic site is usually total transaction cycle time (weighing plus printing) rather than print speed alone.

Can ticket numbering be customized to our own format?
